OUR PEOPLE
An anthropologist, a software engineer and a lawyer turned ad-guy walk into a bar…
shift.101 is the result of truly innovative global collaboration between Justin Papps (Sydney, Australia) and Andrew Jones (Austin, TX). We have also had the benefit of several other like-minded thinkers contributing as we began to put shape around shift.101. Todd Sundsted (New York, NY) was a part of our early days before concentrating on his guru status using Ruby On Rails for software development. Combining the skills, intellect, insight and passion of the founders of shift.101, clients are able to benefit from the combined thinking and experience of not only the directors, but the no-collar workforce they call upon to help create truly innovative solutions for their clients.
Justin Papps
Justin runs our Australian office and was one of our founders. He has lead successful advertising agencies as well as working with CEO’s in shaping their culture and strategy to drive performance. He’s seen some great leaders and some not so great ones. But more than anything else, he has see companies sit on unrealised potential in their people and products. His core focus is to liberate this potential through shift.101’s methodology and approach – creating and accelerating value for clients and their people.
Justin was Young Executive of the Year, as rated by the Australian Financial Review’s BOSS magazine, in 2005 and has spent the last four years working with blue-chip companies across a range of disciplines including marketing, culture, brand, leadership and innovation. Rather than narrow-casting them as discreet disciplines, Justin has looked for ways to integrate thinking across disciplines to create an holistic approach for the organisastions with whom he has worked. Some of those companies include Woolworths Limited, Coca-Cola Amatil, Macquarie Bank, Ernst & Young, Commonwealth Bank and McCann Worldgroup.
Justin is based in Sydney. Australia.

Drew Jones
Drew heads up Shift.101’s research activities. He is responsible for building Shift’s IP platform, which helps companies apply design thinking to drive innovation. Shift understands innovation holistically, as both internal and external to firms. Our work addresses innovation capacity (talent, workspace, communication, collaboration) and market-driven innovation (product/service/brand/business model, etc.).
A Ph.D. in cultural anthropology, for many years he was a university lecturer on organizational behavior, leadership, and innovation in business schools and in the social sciences. Most recently he was Lecturer of Leadership and Innovation at Lancaster University Management School in the UK. He has published two books- The Innovation Acid Test: Growth Through Design and Differentiation (Triarchy Press 2008), and I’m Outta Here: How coworking is making the office obsolete (with Todd Sundsted and Tony Bacigalupo, NotanMBA Press 2009). He has published articles in Leadership, Culture & Organization, Organizational Dynamics, Human Organizations, Top Consultant, and Professional Manager Magazine. He has a forthcoming article on Gen Y entrepreneurs and coworking in Booz & Co.’s flagship business magazine, Strategy & Business.
For the past ten years he has also consulted with businesses in the construction industry, food and beverage industry, software development, sports management, HR consulting, and education management.
His current consulting work centers on helping companies develop workplace effectiveness strategies, which include flex-work programs as well as workplace (re)design. He uses the lens of design thinking to ask: How do we reduce our real estate footprint (and costs) while making workspaces more conducive to open communication, collaboration, and consistent innovation? He has recently opened Shift’s first coworking space- Shift Workspace- in Birmingham, Alabama. Shift Workspace is a working prototype for the design of radically open and community-oriented work. He is based in Birmingham and Austin, Texas.
